Ahead of the traditional FIS Ski World Cup curtain-raiser in the Oetztal resort of Soelden, an early fall of snow has enabled the Rettenbach Glacier to be opened to the general public before competition begins in earnest the weekend commencing Saturday 24th October.

Public transport to the glacier is free in conjunction with a valid lift pass, the Oetztaler bus company sensibly facilitating the transit of as many winter sports enthusiasts to the slopes as possible during a period seen very much as a bonus by the local tourism industry. Once the ‘official’ season commences on the 10th October it is reasonable to expect the kostenlosen busreisen will make way for standardised winter season tariffs but in the meantime, should conditions continue to provide sufficient snow cover, skiers are actively encouraged to take advantage of both the early season snow and a generous public transport offer.
